Calico = printed cotton fabric

Pachyderms = elephants, rhinos and hippos

Sashay = walk in a casual way to be noticed

The blues = a type of music originated by black Americans, usually sad

Neon = fluorescent light (here it means a fluorescent color)

Paisley = material with feather-shaped patterns

Plain-as-Jane = a female that is not too attractive.

ABOUT PEACOCKS:  In America, we usually call both male and female by “peacocks” but the technical term for the female is “peahen”.   It is seldom used except by experts! The male peacock has beautiful, striking tail-feathers on its train, but the female peahen has more brown and drab colors!
