Calico = printed cotton fabric

Pachyderms = elephants, rhinos and hippos

Sashay = walk in a casual way to be noticed

The blues = a type of music originated by black Americans, usually sad

Neon = fluorescent light (here it means a fluorescent color)

Paisley = material with feather-shaped patterns

Plain-as-Jane = a female that is not too attractive.

ABOUT PEACOCKS:  In America, we usually call both male and female by “peacocks” but the technical term for the female is “peahen”.   The male peacock has beautiful, striking tail-feathers on its train, but the female has more brown and drab colors!
