Calico = printed cotton fabric

Paisley = material with feather-shaped patterns
Plain-as-Jane = a female that is not too attractive.
ABOUT PEACOCKS: In America, we usually call both male and female by “peacocks” but the technical term for the female is “peahen”. It is seldom used except by experts! The male peacock has beautiful, striking tail-feathers on its train, but the female peahen has more brown and drab colors!
