QUESTION: How can Jesus Christ be God and the Son of God?
KEY VERSE: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)
IN THE BEGINNING
We have been studying about beginnings: the beginning of the creation of the universe, the beginning of the creation of people, and the sad beginning of sin. Our key verse is not in the beginning of the Bible, but was written during the beginning years of Christianity. It was written by God through the Apostle John, who was a very close friend to Jesus.
IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD
The first verse of the Bible begins “In the beginning God ….” The first verse of the Book of John is “In the beginning was the Word”! Jesus Christ who is the Word of God was there in the beginning of the creation with God. John also tells us that everything was made through Him! (John 1:3) Jesus Christ is the Creator God!
Why is Jesus Christ called the Word?
“The plainest reason why [Jesus] is called the Word, seems to be, that as our words explain our minds to others, so was the Son of God sent in order to reveal his Father’s mind to the world.” (Matthew Henry Commentary)
Jesus explains to us who God is! He told us parables and stories to explain God and God’s Kingdom. More importantly, while on earth, He lived and acted like God. He loved as God loves. He healed people as God heals. He commanded the weather as God does. He raised the dead as God can. He created as God creates. He forgave as God forgives.
Now God wants us to act like Jesus as much as we can! True Christians, who have the help of God’s Spirit inside their hearts, should follow Jesus’ example. Jesus, the Son of God, only did what God the Father wanted Him to do. So we should love and forgive and speak words of healing and peace. And maybe someday, for His glory, not our own will but His, God will tell you to tell a storm, “Peace, be still!” When God tells us to do things, we should obey as Jesus the Son obeyed God the Father.
THE WORD WAS WITH GOD AND THE WORD WAS GOD
So we’re back to the question: How can Jesus Christ be both God and the Son of God?
Jesus said, “I and my Father are one”. (John 10:30). God is a Spirit. (John 4:24) He is God the Father, the Son of God and the Holy Spirit. But all are ONE SPIRIT GOD!
God is so vast and so BIG! (Jer 23:24) Yet His throne is in heaven. From there, the Father God of heavenly light reigns. (James 1:17) But the Holy Spirit of God is everywhere!
Look up into the sky. Can you see all of the universe with your eyes all at once? No! God is so much bigger than the universe! The Holy Spirit of God is both inside and outside of the universe He made! (1 Kings 8:27) You could not possibly see all of God at once, even if His Spirit were visible!
But whenever God chooses to meet face-to-face with people, He makes part of Himself visible and appears as the Son Jesus Christ. God walked and talked on the earth long ago as Jesus Christ. Even before Jesus lived on earth, he visited Abraham and some other of His people. (Genesis 3:8; 18:13; 33; 32:28) Prophets sometimes saw visions of Jesus Christ. (Dan 7:13) These people saw the the Son Jesus Christ who is “the image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15; John 1:18) and the True Light of the world! (John 8:12)
THE TRUE LIGHT
“God is Light.” (1 John 1:5; John 8:12) God is True Light, not the light coming from your lightbulb. But God made physical light and we can learn things about God from studying physical light. (Just as we can learn things about people by observing the things they write and create, we can learn things about God from studying His Word and His creation.)
Here are some more verses from the Book of John about Jesus Christ:
“In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.” (John 1:4)
Jesus is “the True Light, who gives light to everyone…” (John 1:9)
So what can we learn about the True Light from His creation of physical light? What is physical light? Scientists have been trying to figure that out for years just as theologians (people who study God) have been trying to understand God, the True Light, for many years!
Physical light is very hard to describe and understand. Very smart scientists say now that light is both a “wave” (like sound waves or radio waves) and a “particle” (a tiny bit of matter) and also something mysterious that “cannot be fully imagined”! * If the smartest scientists cannot fully understand physical light, is it any wonder that we have a hard time understanding God who is the True Light?
But you can see that scientists think that light which is ONE thing that acts as three things all at the same time: wave, particle and an unknown something.
In the same way, YHWH God is ONE God and yet Father, Son and Spirit!
Did you know that physical light has parts that are NOT visible to the human eye? We can only see part of what light really and wholly is. This part we see is called “visible light”.
Likewise, Jesus, the Son of God, is the part of God, that we can see! He is the visible part when He chooses to be seen! We already learned that Jesus walked on the earth amongst men for a while two thousand years ago, and appeared throughout the Bible to some people, and sometimes people see Him spiritually in visions and dreams. Today many people in places where they will not allow Christian missionaries are having visions of Christ in the spirit! ** Someday, Jesus Christ will return and the Bible says that “every eye will see Him”! (Revelation 1:7)
Yes, Jesus Christ is “the image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15)
Jesus Christ is the visible part of God, but there’s still the big, vast invisible part! This helps to explain why Jesus said, “the Father is greater than I”. (John 14:28) The Greek word for “greater” is “megas”. Something bigger is “mega”. The vastness of light is bigger than the smaller part we can actually see. YHWH God is bigger than what we can see of Him. He’s more than the appearance of Jesus, the Son. Yet Jesus is still FULLY GOD! He’s all True Light!
Visible light is still light and is ONE with the rest of light, not separate. Visible or invisible, light is light! It’s all the same thing or substance. Likewise, the Son of God IS God and is also ONE with God.
“…and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Jesus is both with God and God!
Jesus said, “I and my Father are one”. (John 10:30).
So Granny Vee hopes that this helps you to understand a bit about the mega-mystery of God! Ask the Holy Spirit of God to lead you into all Truth and to help you to understand and believe more and more each day! We come to know God better as we spend time with Him, reading His Word and singing His praise and talking with Him in prayer!
“For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light do we see light.” Psalm 36:9

**(If they really see the True Christ, and not some lying spirit calling itself ‘Jesus’, they will believe in the Truth that is in the Word of God!)
CREDIT: I want to give credit to my son Richard. When he was in high school, he explained to his friend the triune nature of God with one sentence! He used the illustration of light being both wave and particle. I was amazed! His friend instantly seemed to understand this explanation!
