KEY VERSE
GENESIS 1:27 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
“THE BOOK OF BEGINNING” on the BEGINNING OF PEOPLE
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) He made this earth a special place for people to live, and He made an even more special place called Eden, the Garden of Eden, to be the home for people. So, at the end of the sixth “day” of His creating, God made people. (Genesis 2:7)
“God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness’…. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:26-27)
God called the man Adam. Adam called the woman Eve, because she was “the mother of all living”. (Genesis 3:20)
God put Adam in charge of caring for the planet earth, especially the Garden, and made the woman a helper and friend beside him.
IN HIS IMAGE
Now the most amazing thing about people is that God made us in His image, to be like Him and to have fellowship with Him, the Creator of the whole universe! He made us to love Him and be friends!
So how are we like God?
First, how are we NOT like God?
Well, God had no beginning. People have a beginning!
God is the Creator. People are created.
God is the King of Kings. We can be kings in His kingdom only if we honor Him as the King of Kings!
God is all powerful. People have some power but any power we have comes from God! Without God, we can do nothing!
Yeshua [Jesus] said “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
So how are we like God?
Like our Father God, we like to create as well. But everything we make is made with something God first made. We create a drawing on paper made from trees that God made first. We make bread from flour that comes from the plants God first made. Without God, we can do nothing!
SPIRIT BEINGS
God is a spirit. God made us spirit-beings like Himself. One cannot see a spirit with physical eyes. It is like the wind and the air, invisible. You are much more than you can see! You are much more than your body. Your body is the house for your spirit and your soul.
WE HAVE A SOUL
The soul is our mind, our emotions or feelings, and our will.
God has a mind. People have minds. We think and we reason.
God has feelings. We have feelings.
God has a will. He decides to do things. People have wills. We decide to do things.
But what we decide to do is very important! God has given us His Word, the Bible so that we can make GOOD choices. If we keep making GOOD choices, we will have a GOOD life. God’s plan for you is wonderful! And He made you wonderfully in His image!
PSALM 139:13-14
“For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well.”
CONCLUSION
God made people in His image as spirit-beings with souls in a physical body.
